If you want to relax in an open area with beautiful views, Rancho San Rafael Park is a great choice. Reno is located on the western side of Nevada, close to the Tahoe National Forest and several mountains.

This park was once a farm founded in the 1890s by the Pincolini family. They herded the cattle there and sold the property in 1920 to sheep herder Russell Jensen. Unfortunately, he graduated in 1925, but his widow stayed on the ground for 10 years.

Dr. Raphael Herman and his brother and brother-in-law purchased the land in 1935 and built the first permanent building on it. The farm is named after Dr. Herman. The Herman family held the property until Raphael and Norman passed and Marianna Herman moved to California.

He sold the property to the State Public Service Pension System in 1979, which in turn, sold the property to the Washoe County after his citizens agreed to bond issues. The public donation of money and land increased, and the park expanded over the years.

The park hosts the Wilbur D. Mei Museum which charges an entrance fee, but the park itself is well worth a visit. There are 25 hectares of manicured grass, out of a total of 595 hectares of land.

Visitors can also enjoy May’s Arboretum and Botanical Gardens for free.
